What is Circular Retail and Why Should All Retailers Be Thinking Circular?

In today’s rapidly evolving retail landscape, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword – it’s a business imperative.

The Disruption in Retail

Retail is currently experiencing unprecedented disruption, facing challenges from all directions; low growth, low loyalty, disrupted supply chains, high COGS, low margins and eroding profits, pressure from stakeholders and customers to be more sustainable, and rafts of ESG legislation incoming.

Retailers need to simultaneously increase sales, cut costs AND make their businesses more sustainable, which on the face of it, can feel like competing goals.

The Pitfalls of Traditional Approaches

To grow, many are still betting on the old way of doing things; buy cheaper and sell more, often ending up in a never-ending cycle of promotions to try and drive top-line sales – but killing their profit (and the planet) in the process.

This may have worked before, and to some extent might possibly still work – for a while at least. But it’s not a long-term retail growth strategy – because in a world where consumer behaviours and expectations are changing, natural resources are diminishing, and environmental pressures are growing, this linear retail model of ‘take-make-waste’ just won’t cut it.

Redefining Retail: The Circular Approach

Luckily there’s a new way to ‘do retail’ emerging – Circular Retail.
Circular Retail is a model where products, materials, and resources are reused, repurposed, and recycled.

It’s about redesigning systems to eliminate waste, extend product life, and create value at every stage.

It’s about designing products for durability, repairability and recyclability, and keeping resources in use for as long as possible.

It’s Recover, Reuse, Resell, Repair, Refurbish, Refill, Rework, Repurpose, Remanufacture, Recycle.

It’s about making more of what you’ve already made.

Embracing Circular Retail: A Sustainable Future

Circular Retail IS a model that enables businesses to simultaneously increase sales, cut costs and make their businesses more sustainable; and build a resilient, strong, profitable business – for the long-term.

Circular Retail isn’t just a trend, it’s the future of retail – and I, for one, am really excited about the possibilities it offers!
