In a world where understanding and acceptance often come hand in hand, my autism diagnosis in spring 2023, at the age of 37, marked the beginning of a profound journey of self-discovery. Though the revelation came later in life, its impact has already been both transformative and empowering..
Navigating Professional Challenges
Throughout my career, I have encountered challenges that were, at the time, perplexing and frustrating. Repeatedly my response to change felt overwhelming, demands seemed insurmountable, and the concept of autistic burnout loomed ominously over my professional (and subsequently) personal endeavours, with lots of passion projects started but never completed, including a Fine Art degree. It wasn’t until the last year and a half that I have come to understand these struggles as manifestations of my autistic traits. A greater understanding of my needs (and the confidence to voice them) since diagnosis has meant I am able to succeed in attaining some of the personal goals I have been wavering on for so long – such as becoming a qualified yoga teacher.
Harnessing Strengths Through Adversity
Decades of masking, assimilating, and navigating through overstimulating environments has taken their toll, but within these struggles lay the seeds of my greatest strengths. My obsession with data and patterns, coupled with a meticulous attention to detail, have become invaluable assets in my career, allowing me to develop successful customer engagement and loyalty propositions of the highest quality. My hyper empathy, coupled with an unwavering commitment to justice and equality, has infused my work with purpose and meaning. And my ability to perceive the world from a unique perspective has enriched my problem-solving capabilities, offering innovative solutions where others see only obstacles.
Structure, Creativity, and Empathy in Retail Marketing
In the fast-paced world of retail and marketing, adaptability is often touted as a key trait for success. However, my innate need for structure and routine have provided a solid foundation upon which to build strategy and planning. My penchant for thinking outside the box allows me to approach challenges from unconventional angles, which has led to creative breakthroughs and successful campaigns. My deep expertise and specialisation, fuelled by intense focus and concentration, has helped to set me apart as a true leader in my field.
Perhaps the most profound revelation that accompanied my journey of self-discovery was the recognition of an innate drive to connect with others on a deeply individual level. Despite the challenges I faced, this fundamental need has always remained unwavering, a beacon of empathy and understanding in a world too often characterised by misunderstanding and division.
Navigating Autism with Pride and Purpose
As I continue to embrace and understand my autism, I am filled with a sense of pride and confidence in who I am. Each day brings new opportunities for growth and self-realisation, as I navigate the world with a newfound sense of authenticity and purpose. And though the journey has not always been easy, I am grateful for the lessons learned and the strength gained along the way.
To those who may find themselves on a similar path of self-discovery, I offer this advice: embrace who you are wholeheartedly, for within your differences lies the potential for greatness. Seek to understand and celebrate the unique perspectives and experiences of those around you, for it is through this diversity that true understanding and empathy are born.
Now, a year and a half later, my late autism diagnosis has not been a burden, but rather a gift to cherish. It is not a ‘superpower’ as social media meme’s would have you believe, but It has allowed me to embrace my true self, flaws and all, and to find beauty and strength in the very traits that once seemed like obstacles. And for that, I am eternally grateful.
