The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Head of Engineering to join our team and play a pivotal role in advancing our technology and business objectives. This position has been created to drive excellence in product development and engineering and technical operations, ensuring the brand continues to deliver best-in-class solutions to our clients. The role will report into the SLT, specifically into the Chief Product and Technology Officer.
This is a strategic yet hands-on role, requiring a combination of technical expertise, leadership skills, and business acumen to deliver meaningful results for the business and its clients. We have an extensive list of famous retailers and brands in our client base, and a solution which has served them for over 20 years and remains the heart of our business. However, this role is critically about evolving that existing capability whilst modernising the technology, architecture and infrastructure to compete with the best in the industry and meet modern customer expectations. Our strategy revolves around the following pillars which this role will be a key driver of: Product, Data and AI, Commercial, and World Class People.
As Head of Engineering, you will be responsible for:
- Leading and delivering key technical projects aligned with business goals and client needs.
- Collaborating cross-functionally with teams including product, engineering, customer success and operations to drive innovation and efficiency.
- Overseeing day-to-day operations within your function, ensuring smooth execution and adherence to best practices.
- Managing stakeholder relationships, both internally and externally, to align objectives and deliver impactful outcomes.
- Driving continuous improvement through the adoption of new technologies, methodologies, and best practices, including an AWS migration, automation testing coverage, and DevOps principles and practices.
- Providing leadership and mentorship to team members, fostering a high-performance, friendly and empowered culture.
The Person
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of success in leading engineering teams, ideally from the Retail sector, (both in-house major retailer or technology vendor background welcome), and a passion for driving technological and operational excellence. You will possess a combination of strategic thinking, problem-solving abilities, and a collaborative mindset to thrive in the dynamic and fast-paced environment.
Key skills and experience:
- Demonstrable experience in software engineering, speficially with python, typescript, SAAS and PAAS platforms
- Proven track record in leading and managing multiples squads of engineers. The existing team is ~20 product, delivery and engineers
- Confident leading remote teams across multiple locations (currently London, Ukraine, Portugal and South Africa
- Strong technical knowledge of retail technologies and engineering tooling
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and align teams towards common goals. Confident in direct interactions, workshops and communications with clients in major retailers at senior levels. There will be ad-hoc requirements to join client facing workshop as the face of the engineering team
- Experience in driving digital transformation and innovation within an organisation.
- A proactive and results-driven approach, with a focus on continuous improvement and delivery excellence.
- Experience within the retail or supply chain sectors.
- Knowledge of agile methodologies and modern software development practices.
- A track record of implementing data-driven decision-making processes.
- Evidence of strong results in modernising and migrating technologies from monolithic architecture to microservices
- Experience developing and innovating on Composbable Architecture and MACH principles
